FG to pay Keshi, others N78m salaries
ABUJA – The Federal Government is to
step in to pay the outstanding wages of
Super Eagles’ coach Stephen Keshi, the
sports minister has announced,
promising his salary arrears would be
cleared.
Bolaji Abdullahi said he had received
approval from President Goodluck
Jonathan to pick up the tab for Keshi and
his assistants, who are owed a total of 78
million naira ($485,000, 357,000 euros).
Keshi, who earns five million naira a
month but has not been paid for at least
five months, took Nigeria to glory in the
Africa Cup of Nations and qualification for
the World Cup finals in Brazil.
“The Presidency has made arrangements
to pay the salary arrears of the coach of
the Super Eagles, Stephen Keshi,”
Abdullahi told reporters on Thursday.
From left: Super Eagles Assistant
Coaches, Ike Shorunmu; Daniel Amokachi
and Head Coach, Stephen Keshi, at a
media chat on 2014 Fifa world cup
qualifier between Nigeria and Ethiopia, in
Abuja recently.
“We (the sports ministry) don’t have the
responsibility of paying the coaches. The
(Nigerian football) federation has that
responsibility.
“But the government cannot say ‘let the
federation handle it on their own’
anymore. Since it was not in our budget, I
had to appeal to the Presidency and
everything should be cleared soon.”
The Nigerian Football Federation, which
relies on government funding, has been
plagued by financial worries in recent
years and receives little in the way of
private sponsorship.
There are complaints that the budget is
inadequate to meet the team’s
commitments.
Financial constraints have led to protests,
including before this year’s
Confederations Cup, where there was a
stand-off between players and the
federation over the size of win bonuses.
Keshi, meanwhile, said he was baffled at
Nigeria’s position in the latest FIFA world
rankings announced on Thursday,
slipping three places from 33 to 36
despite their World Cup qualification and
a 2-2 draw in a friendly versus Italy.
“I am shocked (by the latest rankings).
We won the Africa Cup of Nations this
year, qualified for the World Cup and
four-time world champions Italy held us
to a draw, so I am surprised,” he said.
The latest rankings are expected to be one
of the yardsticks to be used for next
week’s World Cup finals draw.
Keshi, however, said that as long as the
Super Eagles were winning, rankings were
immaterial.
“We should continue to win and make
Nigerians proud because that is what is
most important to me and Nigerians,” he
added.
“If we remain in wherever we are in the
ranking and keep winning and Nigerians
are happy, then I am happy.

Protesters Disrupt Oduah’s Award Ceremony In London
An award event in London was on
Thursday night disrupted by some
protesting Nigerian women who kicked
against the inclusion of the Minister of
Aviation, Stella Oduah as one of the
recipients of the awards as “shameful
and embarrassing”
Kaduna State Governor, Mukhtar
Ramalan Yero was also one of the
honourees ; while the Aviation Minister
was given an award for “Aviation
transformation and best performing
minister in Nigeria”,
The event, which held at the Radison
Hotel, Central London, was organized
by the Global Peace Movement to
present “Peace, Development and
Security” award to Governor Yero;
while the Managing Director of Nigeria
Airspace Management Agency,
(NAMA) Nnamdi Udo, was recognized
for “excellence” in airspace
management.
The chaos started when the citation of
Ms. Oduah, who was represented, was
being read as prelude to the
presentation of the award. Suddenly, a
woman who gave her name as Taiwo
Akpabio started speaking and
shouting, condemning the conferment
of the award on Ms. Oduah.
Speaking at the top of her voice, Ms.
Akpabio said it was shameful and
insulting for the organizers to give an
award to the minister after series of air
mishaps in the country under her
watch, which resulted in loss of many
lives, as well as the alleged scandal in
the purchase of the bullet-proof BMW
cars involving the minister.
Chaos and confusion descended on
the venue for sometime as all efforts to
calm down the protester failed.
Insisting that she had the right to
speak out and criticize the insensitivity
of the organizers, Ms. Akpabio had to
be dragged out of the venue by
security officials of the hotel.
As Ms. Akpabio was being bundled out,
another protester who gave her name
as Maryam Awolowo took the floor
and rained invectives against the
organizers for giving an award to Ms
Oduah. She too was dragged out of
the venue of the awards event. Both
women asked rhetorical questions,
including how much the organizers
were paid to give the awards to the
recipients.
It took a while before normalcy was
restored and the event continued with
the presentation of the peace and
security award to Governor Yero.
